Trusting the Love of God in the Midst of Suffering – Psalm 13
Blog Article
Hey Friends,
We’ve come a long way on this journey, looking at suffering in the believer’s life through the lens of David’s cry to the Lord in Psalm 13.
We examined the reality of our “internal clock,” which operates on CST (Comfort Self Time), and how we often use it to judge God’s timing in delivering us from trials.
We explored how the enemy animates and amplifies our suffering by flooding our thoughts and emotions with lies, discouragement, and accusation.
We then uncovered one of the critical weapons of warfare we need to regain peace, joy, and internal stability, the Light of God’s Rhema Word. And the most potent form of that light isn’t just situational guidance (what to do), but revelational light of who God is for you in Jesus Christ.
Now, we turn to the final weapon David uses in this psalm.
It’s the bedrock beneath it all.
The Love of God
“But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.”
—Psalm 13:5–6
Earlier in verse 3, David asks God for light, because in that moment, he doesn’t have any—he lacks clarity and insight, and rightfully asks for it.
But not so when it comes to love.
David doesn’t ask for God’s love.
He trusts it.
Even while on the run for his life from Saul, living as a fugitive in the kingdom he’s supposed to rule, David knows this:
God loves him.
He’s already in possession of that love. He is the object of it.
He doesn’t need to feel it. He doesn’t need to ask for it.
He simply needs to trust it—especially when everything around him says the opposite.
Love is the Foundation
The Love of God is an ever-present, unshakable, immovable, indissoluble, irrefutable, eternal reality given to every believer.
Paul puts it this way:
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
—Romans 8:38–39
David’s weapon of warfare here is not to cry out, “Lord, love me!”
It’s to trust in the love that’s already been given—unfailing and true.
This is the foundation of everything.
Once we know God’s love and trust that it’s true for us, even when all hell is breaking loose, we can survive anything and endure everything.
One of satan’s most insidious tactics is to get you to doubt God’s love when things are falling apart. Because if the liar can make you question that, you’re left with nothing to stand on.
God’s love is the ground floor—the foundation.
And it’s not just an idea.
It’s His very nature.
Love Gives Access
Love, by its nature, makes things available to the beloved.
Parents love their children and give them access to their resources.
(Most of the time.)
A husband loves his wife and gives himself fully to her.
(Also, most of the time.)
If we, being flawed and broken, give so freely to those we love imperfectly…
How much more will God give Himself and His resources to His children—whom He loves perfectly?
Because He loves you with an everlasting love, flowing toward you right now—this very moment—you have access to:
- All His Love
- All His Power
- All His Wisdom
- All His Strategic Thinking
- All His Creative Ability
- All His Grace
- All His Delivering Arm
Pause for a second.
Let the weight of His never-ending river of love for you rush over your soul.
Make It Real
You may be asking, How do I make this truth real in my experience?
David shows us in Psalm 13:5–6:
“My heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.”
Rejoicing in this truth and singing praise to God transforms it from just a doctrinal idea into an experiential reality.
As you rejoice and praise, that reality floods your soul with joy, fills you with hope, and strengthens your faith to believe that deliverance will come in due time.
This is a devastating blow to the enemy—because as you rejoice in the love of God and the salvation that flows from it, you remove the ground from which satan would attack your mind and heart.
You render him powerless.
Final Encouragement
So, beloved, if you’re in the middle of a trial,
Ask God for Light.
But as you wait, trust and rejoice in the Love of God.
Look to the Cross—the place where His eternal love was forever proven.
The love that delivered His Son from death
is the same love that will deliver you.
Sing. Rejoice.
And let His love carry you through.
